GRANT BULLOT

HARMONICA

GRANT'S WOODFACE FILES NOW POSTED ON NEWS PAGE

Born and bred in Tauranga, NZ, Grant Bullot has always had an interest in all aspects of the arts.

Grant

His earliest memory of the magic of live music was watching his brother Roger playing in the band Catch 22 with his college chums. Pointing at the bass-playing maniac resplendent in a silver space-suit he was heard to proudly exclaim "That's my bro!", never thinking for a moment that some time in the future he too would be prancing around the stage like some long-haired loon.

The experience stuck with him, and eventually Grant persuaded his brother to show him some chords on the guitar which he battled away with until, in his late teens, Grant departed for the South Island on a hitch-hiking adventure. Not keen to lug a guitar around the Mainland, he decided a harmonica might be a better travelling companion and so unwittingly set off on the road to financial and moral depravity.

A couple of years later, a good friend - Jewels, soon to become Kokomo's manager in the early days of the band - invited Grant to go and watch a solo act at a local bar in the St. Amand Hotel. Entranced by the stirring renditions of Dylan and Leonard Cohen songs, Grant struck up a friendship with the well-spoken troubadour (who, of course, was the inimitable Mr. Derek Jacombs!).

Derek discovered Grant was investigating the secrets of the Mississippi saxophone and eventually persuaded him to do a gig at the National Jazz Fest accompanying Derek on a selection of old blues tunes. The gig went passably well (the Devil's Music beguiled Grant with its off-beat pulse) and so, with the inclusion of Roger on bass, Kokomo was born!

All jokes aside, the people I've met and the experiences I've had (especially sharing the stage with my brother and my wife and what I've learnt jamming with Derek) whilst playing the blues around this beautiful country I wouldn't swap for anything!
